Coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth and the Creighton volleyball team see proof everyday of the impact a strong freshman class can have on a program. Booth is optimistic the three players she signed Wednesday can continue that trend once the 2005 season rolls around. The 17-7 Bluejays already have set a school-record for victories in a season, and Booth's team is preparing this week for its final two home matches of the year - starting with a key Missouri Valley Conference showdown against Northern Iowa on Friday. But the coach still was able to shift her attention to the future Wednesday to talk about how excited she was to receive letters of intent from Amanda Cvejdlik, Jessica Houts and Korie Lebeda. "After seeing the way our 2004 recruits have done, we're obviously pleased with the level of talent that we were able to get in last year," Booth said. "And I think these three players can jump in and play at that level also." The five players Creighton signed last year - defensive specialists Katie Mehal (Omaha Marian) and Mallory Lahm (Norfolk) and hitters Carolyn Decker (Bellevue West), Abby Baumann (North Platte) and Kelly Goc (Ralston) - all have made contributions as freshmen to help the Bluejays put together one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in the country. The Bluejays' class of 2005 includes two more standouts from the metro area in Millard North's Cvejdlik, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter, and Omaha Marian's Lebeda, a 5-9 setter. Houts, a 6-0 middle hitter who attends Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minn., is Booth's first out-of-state recruit. Creighton already has one of the Valley's top setters in Brittany Coleman, a sophomore out of Beatrice who's well on pace to shatter the program record for assists. Booth said she's looking forward to Lebeda giving the team more depth at setter. But the coach said Wednesday she wasn't yet sure whether the team would consider switching to a two-setter offense next year. Senior Janeen Piller has been Creighton's only libero in the three years since the rule change introduced the position to women's college volleyball. Booth said the team has no plans to use Lebeda as a libero next year. "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," Booth said about a potential competition between Coleman and Lebeda.
