Athletes feast after signing

Amanda Cvejdlik and some of her fellow Millard North athletes enjoyed a chicken-fried steak breakfast with their parents Wednesday morning.

Millard North athletes, from left, Gentry Dietz, Lindsey Kline, Ashley Holthaus, Robbie Knight, Merritt Dietz and Amanda Cvejdlik signed letters of intent Wednesday. Most of the group went out to breakfast to celebrate afterward.

They were celebrating signing a letter of intent with the colleges where they plan to continue their athletic careers.

Cvejdlik said she was excited, scared and nervous before signing with Creighton University to play volleyball.

"I love being able to save my parents' money," she said. "It's a great feeling. It's an awesome feeling to have that all set up. It's huge relief off my shoulders."

Cvejdlik, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter, said she had given Creighton the news last spring. Although she had received interest from several Division I schools, she visited only Creighton. She liked the coaches, campus and being able to play close to her family.

"They are a great program," she said. "They are moving up real well."

Cvejdlik said the group wasn't concerned about ordering too much too eat.

"We were joking about how you could pig out on breakfast because everybody saved their parents a good deal of money," she said.

Other athletes to sign letters of intent at Millard North were Gentry Dietz with Southern Illinois basketball, Merritt Dietz with Oklahoma State track and field, Ashley Holthaus with University of Nebraska at Omaha swimming, McKensie Kirchner with Nebraska soccer, Lindsey Kline with UNO swimming and Robbie Knight with Kansas State baseball.

Knight will join former Metro Conference players Eric Eymann of Omaha Creighton Prep and Brad Hutt of Papillion-La Vista as a member of the Wildcats.

Knight batted .390 last season for the 28-12 Mustangs, who were defeated by Omaha Creighton Prep in the state tournament final. He led all players in Nebraska in runs scored (47) and stolen bases (28).

The 6-1 Dietz sisters said they aren't worried about going to different schools for the first time.

"I think we're just ready to be our own person," Gentry said. "We are always known as the twin towers, and people always get us confused."

Gentry said she liked the small-school and family atmosphere at Southern Illinois. Merritt, a thrower, said she connected with OSU Throwers Coach Teri Steer, who is from Crete, Neb.

"I liked the school a lot. It felt like home," Merritt said. "I'm glad I know where I'm going. I can't believe I'm in college now."

Ralston pitcher Mike Nihsen planned to sign his letter to play for Nebraska on Wednesday afternoon at school. He said he picked the Huskers over Creighton, Iowa Western and Wayne State.

"Ever since I was little kid, I wanted to play baseball for Nebraska," he said. "It's the home state team, and where I always wanted to be. I'm excited to get down there and get started."

Kelly Cantrell and Casie Conrad will be teammates and roommates next season when the two Papillion-La Vista softball stars begin their collegiate careers at Division I North Dakota State.

Cantrell will contend for time with two other veteran catchers. Conrad said she hopes to start at second base as a freshman and eventually move to shortstop.

"I'm excited to help them build their program," Cantrell said. "They expect me to come in and work for playing time as a freshman."
