Mustangs subdue Westside

Led by senior Amanda Cvejdlik, Millard North fought off a feisty Omaha Westside team Tuesday in the second round of the Metro Conference volleyball tournament at Bellevue West.

Cvejdlik, a senior middle hitter, fired 19 kills, three aces and 10 blocks as the Class A No. 7 Mustangs defeated the Warriors 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12.

It was a big change from the last meeting between the two schools, the first weekend of the season, when Millard North won 2-0.

"Westside has gotten so much better since the last time we played them," Cvejdlik said. "They were a great battle for us."

The battle began late in the first game when Millard North let a 21-16 lead slip away. Westside, playing without injured middle blocker Allison Cap, scored nine straight points to seal the game.

"We showed a lot of guts out there," Millard North Coach Dave Cork said. "The first game was over. There was no sense dwelling on it. We've got to move forward instead of worrying about what just happened."

Momentum shifted as the Mustangs cruised through game two and won game three. Keelin Bourne, a freshman outside hitter, recorded seven kills between the two games and 17 for the night.

Westside battled back in the fourth game behind Kelly Kantor and Kaela Stratman, who had five and four kills, respectively, in the game. Stratman, a sophomore outside hitter, led the Warriors with 17 kills, one ace and three blocks.

Westside Coach Rob Huebner, who referred to the first meeting between the two schools as a "bloodbath," couldn't have been more pleased with his group's effort Tuesday night.

"I'm extremely proud of the kids," he said. "We did a really good job of not panicking. They showed a lot of poise."

Cvejdlik tallied three blocks and three kills to lead the Mustangs in the fifth game.

"She had some big kills and some big blocks there in that fifth set," he said. "If we are going to go down, we want to have her swinging."

Westside earlier in the day defeated Omaha Burke 3-1, while Millard North cruised past Omaha South 3-0.
